With almost twenty releases under their belt since their start in January of 2009, Bonbon is a fun and friendly group just doing their thing; dubbing. The project is headed by MomoPhiy and nytefaerie and currently has three main groups;
♥ Grazie! ♥ [covers Buono]
★ Chokoretto Girls ★ [covers Momus]
♫ Bonbon Workshop ♫ [covers Berryz]
There is also the group Jellybeans, whose members fill in as covers when needed, and also partake in groudubs and shuffle units.
MINI INTERVIEW TIME~
So, I messaged the project, asking them some basic questions, and this is some of what I got back. Thanks so much to Fae and Phiy for taking the time to reply!
AYA: When did your project first start? I see the date listed on the profile, but is it accurate?
FAE: "I'm pretty sure we started on that date. . .Certainly around that time. (But) if you mean when we got our groups, that was later. Mid July last year. . .we started auditions for our Buono group (Grazie) for an Airi Suzuki. . .At the same time we decided to open auditions for a couple more groups, Berryz and Morning Musume (Bonbon Workshop and Chokoretto Girls)."
AYA: Where did the idea come from?* Just a random thought? A friend's idea? A funny conversation? Did it take some consideration, or was it a; Let's DO IT, kind of thing?
FAE: "After discovering Buono we'd been learning the dances. . .and when Phiy discovered dubbing it seemed a fun idea to try. . .and well, we made it. We thought up our name in school. . .We were also going to call it something Cherry themed at first but the names were taken, and well, it turned out better in the end. I can't imagine not being Bonbon now."
AYA: What would you say is the goal of your project; Are you set on making progress as a group, or is your main goal to just have fun? Somewhere inbetween?
FAE: "I'd say the goal of our project is to have fun~ We try to make our dubs as good as they can be, but that's more for the feeling of having worked together to produce something we can be proud. . ."
AYA: Anything interesting you'd like to add?
FAE: "All of our groups have symbols (★ ♫ ♥), ♠ All of Bonbon. . .They're thanks to Phiy who does all the video uploading basically."
Moving on!
It took me forever to decide what dub to cover. I was set on shuffle unit Bonbon Lucky Dip's dub of Shiroi Tokyo, but I kept putting this entry off as I was waiting on the interview reply, and by the time I got to it, I was trying to find something else to cover. And so I chose Bonbon's latest release.
Momoko Tsugunaga - Fae / nytefaerie
Miyabi Natsuyaki - Phiy / MomoPhiy
Airi Suzuki - Sayuri / Lilacsilk28
[*] I love Fae's little Ciao! It's so cute! This song is insanely catchy and this dub is freaking, dare I say it for the 12th+ time? Yes. EPIC! I like the melody of the verses more than the chorus, and I like how this group sounds on them better as well. When they sing together on those first two lines (well all of the verses really, lol) all three of these gals just sound SO good!!
[*] Homg, if I thought Fae's was cute, Sayuri's Ciao! is like 3 times cuter, and totally reminds me of Airi. 0:45 and 1:03 are two of my favorite spots! I love the tune here, and it really shows off the girls' pretty/cute voices so well. I even really liked the little higher note in there; sounded good! I think Phiy and Fae also suit their parts well.
[*] I think I have remarked before on how I adore the clearness and complete beauty of Sayuri's voice. Her solos always make me super happy, cause they are always awesome! 1:11 for example; wonderful vocals. And she is followed by miss Fae! I love the second end of her solo, around 1:18, her Aisu especially!
[*] ! I have not yet said anything about Phiy, but it's cause I haven't reached her first solo until now, which is at 1:20. This is Phiy's last single with Grazie! ;w; The next time you hear Grazie, Ai (kakkoiko) will be singing as Airi. The lovely mature vocals and energy Phiy contributed to this group shall be missed.
[*] I'm pretty sure it's Sayuri that does the little 'Buono' at 1:32, and it's SO cuuute [LOL, Fae says that it's actually Phiy. I wasn't really sure ;w; All three sound so cute] Oh, some higher notes here in the chorus; most of them turned out good, maybe a little strain is noticable, but with veryone not having high-range voices, it was pulled off rather well.
[*] 2:55 was awesome!! I really liked this solo of Fae's! I must admit that she does sing quite a few notes out of tune usually (though her cuteness and energy totally make up for it), but not this time!! Every freaking note of this solo was super good!! I love it~
[*] Phiy at 2:59. I liked the first half of her solo more, since the ending note was a little off. Plus I really like her on the repeated 'o' sounds in OOBUN, which is supposed to be english-to-japanese for oven; how cute!
[*] And the group did a really good job at 3:58 on the little group-solo bit with quiter backing-music. I really like how Sayuri, Fae and Phiy sound together. Again, the high notes are a little stretched, but still accomplished. Overall; fabulous dub!! I must listen to some earlier releases by ♥ Grazie! ♥ ~
